What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any dental problem that requires immediate attention from a dentist. Here, our Edmonton dentists describe which problems are considered dental emergencies.

Broken or Chipped Teeth

In most cases, chipped or broken teeth can be saved, but they are considered dental emergencies and require urgent care. A small break can usually be fixed with a filling, and more substantial breaks will most often be repaired with a root canal or a crown.

Lost Fillings

When you lose a filling, it can weaken the structure of the tooth because the interior becomes exposed. This means that a missing filling is considered a dental emergency, and you should have it fixed by your dentist straight away.

Knocked Out Teeth

Your dentist may be able to replace a knocked out adult tooth. If the tooth is put back in place within an hour, it has a fair chance of taking root again in your jaw. A knocked out tooth is a considered an urgent dental emergency, so be sure to get to your dentist's office as soon as possible.

Severe Toothaches

If you have a severe toothache that cannot be managed with over-the-counter pain medication (such as ibuprofen), this is considered a dental emergency. If you are experiencing a severe toothache, apply ice to your jaw, and get to your dentist's office as soon as you can.

Objects Lodged Between Teeth

If there is an object lodged between your teeth that cannot be removed with dental floss, you must have it removed by your dentist. Avoid trying to dislodge with with a sharp object, as this may push it even further between your teeth, and you could also injure your gums.

Lip or Tongue Lacerations

If you injure the inside of your mouth and it results in a laceration, this is a dental emergency. Use a clean cloth to quell the bleeding. If there is any swelling, apply an ice pack to the area, and be sure to seek treatment right away.
